DEV Community
Connect a DEV Community account with an API key and publish articles.
A connected DEV account can publish articles, and comments on them arrive in the inbox to read. DEV has no sign-in screen for outside apps, so you connect with an API key.
Get an API key
- On dev.to, open Settings, then Extensions. The Open DEV API key settings link in the eksis dialog goes straight there.
- Generate a new key and give it a name, such as eksis.
- Copy the key.
Connect
Open the dialog
Select + next to Channels in the sidebar, then choose DEV Community. The Connect DEV Community form opens in the dialog.
Paste the key
Paste it into API key and choose Connect. eksis stores the key encrypted and never shows it again.
If it does not connect
| Message | What to do |
|---|---|
| That does not look like a DEV API key | Paste the key alone: a short string of letters and digits without spaces. |
| Could not connect DEV Community | Generate a new key on dev.to and try again. |
Before you post
The text you write is the article body, sent as Markdown, and the first image becomes the cover. The DEV tab in the composer asks for:
- Article title: required.
- Tags (up to four), Series, and Canonical URL: optional.
- Save as a draft on DEV: sends the article to your DEV drafts instead of publishing it.
Good to know
- The DEV API only reads comments, so you answer them on dev.to itself. A first comment is not possible.
- Deleting the key on dev.to cuts the connection.
- On Free, eksis publishes up to 30 articles per account in any 24 hours.
- Article rules: DEV Community specifications.
